BIO-SKETCH 個人簡歷

Dr. Ann-Shyn Chiang received his Ph.D. in 1990 and completed postdoctoral training at Rutgers University in 1992. He joined National Tsing Hua University as an Associate Professor in 1992, became a Professor in 1997, and took a sabbatical at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 2001. In 2011, he became an adjunct faculty member at the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind at UC San Diego.

Dr. Chiang is known for his pioneering connectomics research on memory. His work includes the first brain-wide wiring diagram in Drosophila, which The New York Times described as a step toward mapping the human brain. His discoveries, including the role of protein synthesis in long-term memory, were featured in Taiwan’s first full article in Science in 2012.

He has received numerous honors, including election as an Academician of Academia Sinica (2014), TWAS Prize in Biology (2012), and the National Chair Award (2015, 2020). He is currently the Director of the Brain Research Center and Distinguished Chair Professor at National Tsing Hua University.

MAJOR SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS 重大科學成就

  • Odor Representation in Higher Brain Centers: Uncovered neuronal temporal identity and mechanisms for gating CO2 information, advancing understanding of olfactory processing (Cell, 2006, 2007; Science, 2013).
  • Long-Term Memory in Engram Neurons: Found that long-term memory requires protein synthesis in a small subset of neurons, essential for memory consolidation (Science, 2012; Cell Reports, 2023).
  • 3D Fly Brain Database: Developed the first brain-wide wiring map at single-neuron resolution, aiding sensory circuit mapping (Current Biology, 2011; Nature Communications, 2015).
  • Tissue Clearing Technology: Created FocusClear technology, the first tissue-clearing reagent compatible with GFP for high-resolution 3D imaging of intact brains at 30 nm resolution (Nature Communications, 2019).
